Perimeter House
This new beach house is designed as a private oasis for a semi-retired couple, their visiting adult children, and future grandchildren. A simple, modern form floats above an open carport, respectfully nodding to the character of surrounding beach shacks. Permeable driveway surfaces and framed masonry walls form a courtyard entry, blending permanence with the fine grain of coastal architecture.
A moody, enclosed entry corridor opens to a lush, double-height courtyard, creating a dramatic play of light and shadow. Above, the upper-level walls act as a strong, enveloping “box” that frames the dwelling and courtyards below, creating private, curated views downwards while carefully preventing any sight lines to neighbouring properties.
This framing enhances a sense of sanctuary and connection within the home’s layers. The home embraces the landscape through a series of meandering, decked walkways on the lower level, with seamless indoor-outdoor flow shielded from external views. A double-height outdoor room captures winter sun from the north and soft ambient light from the south, while solid walls block east and west exposures.
Throughout, visual and spatial connections between levels foster a deep connection to nature, delivering privacy, calm, and a profound sense of retreat.
